Magazines: Mono-Kultur, Ryan McGinley

Every three months, I get a package from Germany that I'm always excited to open because I know the latest edition of Mono-Kultur will be inside. This time it's the turn of US photographer Ryan McGinley. I had a vague awareness of his work, he does really amazing things, I think, with light and movement. But I didn't really know much about him. And one of the things I love about this magazine is the simple Q&A interview format, which always feels more like a really interesting conversation that you get to eavesdrop on than a formal interview. So now I feel that I know alot.

It's a great issue. But every issue of Mono-Kultur is special because each one is obviously made with so much care and attention, and enthusiasm for their subject. And for some reason that just feels like quite a precious thing.

They're up to issue no. 27 now. I have a few, but I'd like the whole set – one day I might try and invest in the back issues. It would be a lovely thing to have. Anyway, they're not widely distributed, you tend to find them in museum bookshops that stock magazines, like the Design Museum, or Serpentine Gallery, or good independent art & design bookstores. Or you can order online. But well worth seeking out.
