Being a Book Recommender at the Camden Square Festival

I recommend books to people all the time, and yet somehow sitting behind a desk and trying to do it formally was more than a little intimidating, particularly as most of the people I met were extremely well-read. Conversations varied between a 90-year old gentleman who had read almost everything but who was delighted to chat, and a man who showed me a book he had written about reincarnation and then divulged that he himself was not originally from Earth. Alien he may have been, but he was also a charming conversationalist.

In between I met people who struggle to find the time to read, and people who have too many books on their TBR. A common theme was finding ways to focus on reading, something I too find a challenge. Things that came to mind for me were finding ways to recapture teenage reading, where we happily ignored the world to power through books, thoroughly immersed, or reading the first chapter to turn books on the TBR shelf from strangers into friends. I typed up my book suggestions and gave them to people. Everyone was very charmed by my typewriter, as was I – mostly it sits in a cupboard in my house, so it was lovely to have an excuse to be using it. And you know what? If you want to print something out on the go the perfect device turns out to be a typewriter! Also lots of funny sessions with children who had never seen anything like this outlandish machine and were completely fascinated. Things got quite philosophical when I explained that you can't erase your mistakes, and that they become part of the work. (Although someone later told me that if you have the right white typewriter ribbon you can erase your mistakes!)

The flip side of all these chats were all the recommendations people gave me. It was a win win day.
