Book Club: The Luminaries, Eleanor Catton

The-luminaries

It's that Booker time again, and this year the surprise winner was The Luminaries, by 28-year-old New Zealander Eleanor Catton. With some trepidation, as the book is over 800 pages long, we dutifully weighed in. Find out what we thought here (but if you don't want to leave I can tell you it's a good'un, though not without flaws). Sadly I can't find any youtube clips of Robert Macfarlane's speech (Chair of the Booker judges), which is a shame as I'm a little bit in love with him, now. But if interested you can read it, here and crush or no crush I can recommend his book The Old Ways, a lyrical exploration of the ancient paths of the British Isles and beyond. But back to the Booker and here's Eleanor Catton talking about her book.
