Book Club: The Invisible Bridge

I've been a little slow on the updates lately (I'll write 'sorry I haven't posted', just to see if I can make it onto this blog that I love) because of baby Emiko (see below) I'm a busy girl. But here's What Katy Read's review of our latest book, The Invisible Bridge by Julie Orringer. This was my recommendation and I confess to being a little dismayed that not all of the book group loved it as I did, but that's the chance you take when you recommend something you really like. It made for good discussion, which is what book club is all about so I don't mind.

There are some other bits and pieces of Orringer's writing on her website, and if you like you can listen to her read you this short story, 'Flores', courtesy of KQED Arts. I love all the good stuff that is on the internet, sometimes.

Also, I finally got around to organizing our archive by rating. If you're interested, have a look here. The best thing we've read so far was Cormac McCarthy's The Road (which scored 94), and the worst, Howard Jacobson's Finkler Question (18). I recently found myself standing next to Howard Jacobson on the train station platform coming home from the Hay Book Festival. I opened my mouth to say something, but realised I didn't really have anything positive to offer and thought better of it.
