Back in London after 3 weeks away in Japan and Korea, and plenty of lovely printed things are nestling in my suitcase waiting to be unpacked. So I'll share those in due course. In the meantime, to cheer myself up, and remember why I like living in London (not clearly apparent when arriving home yesterday to pouring rain and a freezing house) I cycled over to Broadway Market where I had a happy time in the Artwords bookshop. It's such a lovely space and even though it gets a little crowded on Saturdays I still soaked up more than enough inspiration to get me through the weekend and into next week. So, in no particular order, there's Turning Pages, a new book on editorial design published by gestalten (who have a reliably excellent list). It's full of detailed information and geeky cross-references that will more than satisfy anyone interested in the contemporary print scene.
Where Children Sleep is a book by photographer James Mollison that very simply presents pictures of different children around the world and where they sleep. So often I think the simplest things are the most magical, and, in addition to being beautiful portraits, to compare the relative situation of these children is endlessly fascinating and often quite poignant. More pix and fuller review on the CR website here.
And finally, Not in Fashion by photographer Mark Borthwick. I don't really know anything about him, but I love his work, and the way this book was put together as a sort of informal scrapbook. There's something very ephemeral and beautiful about his pictures (have a browse through his portfolio here), and the design of the book nicely complements this.
So there's three for my wishlist. Lucky Christmas is coming up!
