Our World Now

The third book in the Reuters Our World Now series, designed by me, and edited by Amanda, is out. These are yearbooks, collecting together the best of Reuters amazing global news & documentary photography. The original picture edit, from thousands and thousands of images, was done by the in-house team at Reuters, with whom we then worked closely (since last July, when we started) to create the book you see here.

It's looking lovely, I think. Some favourite spreads

The book opens with this shot of a Congolese money changer, by Finbarr O'Reilly, whose pictures are always powerful and strong. Another of his below on the right – I love this spread for the colours. On the left, surfers at Tamarama beach, Sydney by Daniel Munoz.

It can be hard pairing up images from completely different subjects. Sometimes it works if they have a similar emotional tone, as here with an unemployed American woman on the left, and a migrant labourer from Bangladesh on the right.

Or here, I loved this spread – although I don't think anyone else really liked it as much as me – on the left deaf and mute villagers communicating using sign-language in a village in northern india, and on the right a Bosnian Muslim arriving at the village of Prusac for a pilgrimage.

Quite often (!) the best ideas for picture combinations are not mine. This one here was Amanda's idea, pairing up Crufts contestants with Micky Rourke in front of a poster for The Wrestler.

Another nice aspect of the book is the Witness features that are sprinkled throughout – these offer a more in-depth look at the work of a single photographer covering a single issue, as here, where Adrees Latif documented refugees in Swat Valley, Pakistan, with hauntingly beautiful and powerful images.

I made a video of the flick through. Look out for it in bookshops, or it's on Amazon, here – £6.50, which actually seems ridiculously cheap given all the amazing stuff that's in it. A worthwhile addition to anyone's bookshelf, I reckon. Hope you like it.

Oh, and there's a much more professional image slideshow on the Reuters website, here.
