I got to leaf through a really beautiful book the other day on NZ artist Bill Hammond. It's called 'Jingle-Jangle Morning', after one of his paintings I think. My pictures sadly don't do it justice.
Firstly the gorgeous French-fold cover; what is it about French folds? It's just a big bit of paper wrapped around the book, but there's something about the layering, I think, and the quality of the paper, that makes them irresistible. Maybe because the book comes wrapped up, like a present. Or maybe it's just the folds – pleasing like origami.
The paper is thick and has a lovely texture to it, & the use of gold makes the whole thing seem lush. Lovely pared-back design inside
With some nice little typographic details
Designed by Christchurch designer Aaron Beehre it won an award or two, and deservedly so, I think. It's the sort of book that reminds me of why books can be so special, and a beautiful showcase for the work of this artist. I'd say look out for a copy, but I think you're unlikely to see it. Unless you happen to be in New Zealand that is.
